Principal Duties & Responsibilities

Supports all aspects of venture investing; leverages relationships with external eco-system to identify and screen deals of interest; initiates discussions and follows-up with start-up leadership and entrepreneurs

Supports build out and analysis of financial models; assists with evaluation of investment opportunities and due diligence efforts for deals under consideration

Assists with pipeline, deal and portfolio reviews; schedules review meetings at appropriate cadence; develops materials in support of internal deal flow/review sessions and external facing meetings; works with other members of the team to maintain deal log

Supports all other Aflac Ventures’ activities including Marketing, Operations and Fund Administration

Tracks market activity including funding events and trends, exits, new fund formation and startup and sector news; prepares periodic reports to update team

Travel up to 50% required, as needed

Performs other related duties as assigned

Education & Experience

Bachelor’s degree in engineering, mathematics, business administration or other quantitative discipline and six years of professional job-related work experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience

A minimum of three years in the insurance industry, in Strategy or Corporate Development preferred; business unit experience preferred

Experience with storyboarding and developing high quality presentations

Master’s degree in Business or Finance preferred

Strong educational background and/or experience in financial modeling, financial statement analysis and/or statistical analysis

Our client is a leading Southeast growth equity firm focused on control and minority investments in healthcare and technology. They are approximately $500 million AUM and investing out of their 3rd fund and seeking a Pre MBA Associate. This is a career track position. Qualified candidate will support all aspects of the fund’s investment process and work with all members of the  team.

More specific responsibilities will include:

  • Screening and evaluating investment opportunities
  • Reviewing business plans and performing due diligence with respect to potential investments
  • Maintaining the deal log
  • Financial analysis and modeling
  • Research related to investments, including in-depth research of the prospect’s business, industry and competition
  • Preparing investment memoranda and financial exhibits; preparing presentation materials and other supplemental information
  • Drafting quarterly reports to Fund investors

Job Qualifications:

  • Minimum of two years in related field with preference for investment banking, public accounting, private equity, venture capital, consulting, or related experience
  • Ties or interest in the Southeast

  • Strong financial analysis and modeling skills are required
  • Must be detail-oriented with excellent written and verbal communication skills

Experience:

  • Assist Be Curious Partners investment team managing deals from start-to-finish, including opportunity identification, deal design, and deal execution with early-stage companies (pre-seed, seed, series a).
  • Support the customization of deal documents, including term sheet and MOU.
  • Assist in Be Curious Partners due diligence processes to evaluate technology, products, business, and financial plans; perform customer and market assessments, competitive analyses, and model capital requirements across the early stage company life cycle. Help prepare variance analyses, investment memoranda, and conduct research for comparable company/investment data.
  • Work with Be Curious Partners investment team to ensure a consistent investment process. Assist in the completion of pre-investment committee checklist, investor presentation development, and critical review and risk assessment of prospective investments.
  • Assist in developing, implementing and managing systems to track and organize due diligence files, investment documents, and portfolio company documents.
  • Support Be Curious Partners in creating deal flow that attracts new, high-quality investment opportunities and build relationships with venture funds, strategic investors, angel investors, and other key investment stakeholders. Evaluate, appropriately document, and report on new investment opportunities to meet deal flow objectives.
  • Assist in financial model assumption development, forecasting, and stress testing. Perform variance analysis of actual versus budget for prospective investments and current portfolio companies.
  • Manage database of investment banking, venture capital, and strategic partner contacts. Assist in outreach to these constituencies.
  • Assist in monitoring portfolio company progress and maintain up-to-date records within Be Curious Partners platforms. Respond to a variety of information and data reporting needs.
  • Lead maintenance and management of third-party databases (e.g. Pitchbook, Crunchbase, CB Insights, Angel List), updating for investment activities.
  • Generate required internal approval forms and documentation necessary for investment-related activities, including disbursements of funds, in accordance with Be Curious Partners program policies and procedures and fund management agreements.
  • Assist Be Curious Partners accounting firm in preparing fund level reporting and meeting preparation for Be Curious Partners limited partners and capital call documentation preparation as needed.
  • Advocate for the mission, programs, and portfolio companies of Be Curious Partners.

Qualifications and Skills:

  • Education: Minimum of Bachelor’s degree, Master’s degree in business, sciences, engineering, or a related field preferred.
  • Experience: 4 to 8 years of relevant private early-stage investment and/or combination of venture development, technology commercialization, corporate development, M&A, and/or investment management experience.
  • Analytical Know-How: Excellent technical financial and analytical skills. Broad business and investment knowledge, and can understand and interpret financial statements. Solid command of Excel and practical experience with businesses’ financial / accounting functions.
  • Project Management: Detail-oriented; able to manage competing priorities across a variety of tasks, timelines, and stakeholders. Strong work ethic.
  • Strong Communication: Highly professional at all times with excellent verbal, written, and presentation skills. Prior experience with client management and/or managing internal and external stakeholders.
  • Business Judgment: Ability to make well-reasoned conclusions and recommendations regarding new investment opportunities, and relative to specific transaction execution and portfolio management situations.
  • Team-Oriented: Comfortable working in ambiguity and cross-functional teams and able to collaborate with diverse professionals, including entrepreneurs, venture capitalists, angel investors, strategic partners in the Be Curious Partners Ecosystem. Ability to function effectively in a matrix management setting.

Responsibilities

Here’s how you might jump in to help us find, invest in and fuel companies, with (representative) responsibilities including:

  • Working with the investment team to lead deal structure, identify prospects, review business plans, perform due diligence on prospect companies, competitive landscape analysis, research industries, market sizing, build financial models and perform valuation analyses.
  • Helping with business strategy, exit events, analytical and financial support, and general support of portfolio companies.
  • Consolidate market research around trends, markets, target companies.
  • Partner with the team to help source deal flow.
  • Performing portfolio monitoring and reporting functions, including participating in calls/meetings with management teams, financial statement reviews and analyses, and board package reviews.
  • Interface with our 3rd party accounting and CFO firm to prepare reports on fund.
  • Network with the entrepreneurial community by attending industry events, demo days, and representing Be Curious in the world as we seek out more entrepreneurs in unexpected places.

With that in mind, it may help to have:

  • At least 4 years of related experience (e.g. VC/PE, entrepreneurship, management or strategy consulting, etc.)
  • A degree in finance, math, economics (MBA preferred)
