Venture Capital Principal, Construction @ Heidelberg Cement - Berlin, Germany

Apply here or get our referral

We are hiring a Principal/VP with 5-6 years VC experience. We prefer brilliant minds and personalities. Previous B2B startup or investing experience is valuable.

The skinny:

Let’s be honest: When you read “HeidelbergCement”, your first thoughts might be “dusty, slow, uninspiring”.

And you might think: another stupid corporate VC fund.

Nothing could be further from the truth. We pride ourselves in being among the fastest companies in the world with the best business sense. You might not believe this right away – we usually don’t talk a lot about us. Just google us for 5 minutes, and you will stumble across other people who talk about our speed, consequence and business acumen.

What’s true: we don’t build autonomous cars. We don’t build landing rockets. We don’t build blockchains and ICO them.

But what we do is we really disrupt one of the last undisrupted industries: Construction. Construction is one of 3 industries responsible for 88% of all inflation since the year 2000. It is one of the most inefficient industries in the world. It is just beginning its digital journey.

That means: it is one of the last El Dorados to build exponential new businesses.

The problem is: Construction is ultra intransparent, fragmented and opaque for startups. That does not mean they will not succeed – we believe they will – but it means customer acquisition cost can be crazy, and the time and cost to pivot are high.

The point is: investing in B2C startups was straightforward. Been there, done that. We believe that investing in B2B disruptions is the next big frontier – but it is a different ballgame for VC investors. We believe startups in the construction space will scale better, faster and cheaper with the support of a truly entrepreneurial corporate.

Our unique entrepreneurial culture and governance put us in the best position to fuel the complete disruption of construction. Our ambition is to fundamentally change how construction works. We are serious about this - no PR nonsense, no pseudo-disruption, no digital lab in Berlin that pretends to do innovation. We disrupt construction with force and a pure financial motivation.

For that reason we operate against a precise and aggressive investment thesis. We invest in 12+ companies per year, typically entering at either Series A or B. We have the governance and incentives to act highly autonomous and fast. And we have the mindset to add value to our portfolio companies – not the other way around. We just closed our fund. It gives the rare opportunity to join a fund before the actual start, and shape the portfolio from beginning to end.

The point is: we are a unique VC with an unfair advantage set-up you typically do not see in any other VC.

On our team we give you a mission. Your mission is

  1. Finding 12+ rockstar startups a year within the construction space. Leading the investments and closing the deals. Developing our ecosystem of peer VCs, tech universities and startup programs.
  2. Conducting due diligence with a focus on hidden insights. Carving out the fundamentals in startups’ business models. Plain vanilla DD is easy – we go for the fundamentals. Using the insights and fundamentals to further and further refine our investment thesis over time.
  3. Giving our portfolio companies unique insight into construction. Learning unique insights into construction and infusing into our portfolio companies.
  4. Coordinate value-adding services to your portfolio companies, such as talent sourcing, data science, coding and deep market expertise.
  5. Taking the less experienced members of the VC team under your wing and spreading your experience within the team. We are not looking for a formal hierarchy guy – we operate flat. We want you to coach and lead by insight.

You fit to us when you are …

  • a brilliant mind who preaches ‘first principles’ thinking and logical reasoning. You have a summa cum laude Bachelors degree or better from a top tier school to back this up.
  • an execution machine who always aspires towards ‘world-class’, rolls up the sleeves and gets it done. You have 5-6 years of previous experience as a venture capital investor.
  • an energizer who finds it easy to excite other people. An empathizer who is hearing the intent and has excellent observation skills. We like people with a rare combination of ambition, humor and low vanity.
  • a precise, no-nonsense communicator who expresses clear opinions that are based on data, facts (!)

We strongly believe in aligned incentives with financial upside. That’s why we give you carry in our portfolio. In return, we expect you to have intellectual excellence, an entrepreneurial work ethic, and integrity.

We like things fast and simple. Please just use the Easy Apply function and attach your CV. We give you our response within 48h.

Location: Berlin or Los Angeles

Start date: Immediate or within 3 months

Salary: Competitive salary (fixed+bonus) and carry

Associate @ Point Nine Capital - Berlin, Germany

Apply here or get our referral

We’re looking for a startup lover, technology enthusiast, market researcher, company picker, deal maker, portfolio supporter, thought leader in the making and future superstar venture capitalist, in other words

Point Nine is an early-stage venture capital firm primarily focused on SaaS, online marketplaces and frontier tech. We are a small, international team with different backgrounds, opinions, interests and tastes. What we share is a passion for startups, a commitment to meritocracy, and the aspiration to be what we call a “good VC”.

Your role in a snapshot

You’ll be a major contributor to all aspects of an investment from sourcing, evaluating and winning a deal to supporting our portfolio companies. As part of the investment team you’ll help us make sure that we see all relevant deals by proactively finding startups, taking care of incoming leads, building great relationships with various stakeholders in the ecosystem and helping maintain and develop our global brand, reputation and network.

Consider an Associate role at Point Nine as one of the fastest ways to learn, build your network, and advance your career. You’ll get a ridiculous amount of independence, combined with the ability to learn from us as well as the amazing founders of our portfolio companies.

Here’s a more detailed overview of what you’ll be working on. The role is based in Berlin, but expect a lot of traveling.

Requirements

  • You have a huge passion for startups and technology, an entrepreneurial mindset and an insatiable desire to learn. We’re all bullish about ML and AI, but until machines will take over our jobs we want to add some super strong non-artificial AI to our team.
  • You have 1-2 or more years of experience in the tech industry, be it as a startup employee/founder or as a VC. If you’re coming from an investment bank we’ll still consider you if you are a nice person otherwise. ;-) (It happens to the best of us. We’re looking at you, Pawel.)
  • You’re a digital native. If someone in your family has an IT problem, you’re usually the one who has to fix it. Extra points for engineers and coders.
  • You have excellent analytical skills and you love to work with numbers. Turning raw data into a cohort analysis? You’ll figure it out!
  • You’re great at self-organization and task prioritization. You can work autonomously, but you’re also a great team player.
  • You’re fluent in English. Further language skills are a plus. (So far we have people from Belgium, France, Germany, Poland and Spain in our team, and we’re always keen to increase our coverage.)
  • You can communicate efficiently and effectively. Extra points if you’re a good writer.
  • You’re knowledgeable and passionate about a topic like online marketplaces, cryptocurrencies, machine learning or some other hot sh*t, and you aspire to become a renowned expert in your field.

Interested?

If you’re interested we’d like to ask you to send us:

(1) your CV and any other information you think might be helpful;

(2) the URLs or usernames of your professional online presences (LinkedIn, Twitter, Quora, GitHub,…), as applicable;(3) your thoughts about three out of the following questions:

  • What is your favorite company and why?
  • We have a €75M fund. How many companies do you think we should invest in? Why this number?
  • Are there any cryptocurrencies or crypto projects you are particularly excited about? Why?
  • How would you define “liquidity” in an online marketplace?
  • Is there a VC in the US that you admire?
  • Do you know a startup that you think we should invest in?

Analyst @ BlueYard Capital - Berlin, Germany

Submit your CV to: team@blueyard.com or get our referral

We live in times where technology is having an unprecedented impact on the fabric of both societies and markets. With the velocity of technologically driven change increasing at an exponential rate, we are on the cusp of many fantastic new opportunities and great risks at the same time. We have the chance to liberate the internet from its monopolistic gatekeepers by creating a more decentralized web; we can use technology to empower the individual at a time when institutions and nation states are losing their ability to provide societies with what they need; and we can use new technologies to transform the fundamental well-being and longevity of every human being. Those are the opportunities that drive the BlueYard team

We are excited to be expanding the BlueYard team with an Analyst position. This is a two-year role based in Berlin, supporting the team in backing entrepreneurs that decentralize markets, empower users and liberate data. At the core of BlueYard is the belief that venture capital is a product for entrepreneurs, and if you are inspired by working with an intellectually curious, small and value-driven team, we want to hear from you.

The Analyst role includes:

  • Identifying technologies and trends that will positively impact economies and societies and represent attractive venture investment opportunities
  • Carrying out market and company due diligence on investment opportunities
  • Working with our portfolio companies to support them
  • Helping with our community management and events
  • Supporting with fund reporting and analyses
  • Working directly with the two General Partners, embedded in a small team, allowing for a steep learning curve and significant exposure to the entrepreneurial ecosystem

Here’s what we’d like you to bring to the table:

  • A strong understanding of and passion for science (biology, chemistry, material science, physics, etc) and / or up- and down-stack web technologies and services
  • We’re exploring areas such as A Decentralized and Encrypted Web, Humans & Algorithms, Quantum Computing and The Future Of Biology — those are the type of topics you should feel comfortable exploring
  • Self (fire-)starters — be able to run on your own, identify opportunities and prioritise without much guidance
  • The ability to clearly articulate thoughts and opinions about markets and companies, both in written and spoken form
  • Strong interpersonal skills — happy to work extensively within the team and with entrepreneurs
  • Ability to carry out market and financial analyses
  • Native (or close to) English language skills both written and oral
  • The willingness to roll-up your sleeves

There is no ideal background for this role and a formal degree is not required; we think that the role will be suitable to a wide range of folks from fresh graduates with a track record of science and / or technology internships, to candidates with a few years of work experience in startups, science and technology.

If you are interested in the position please send the following to team@blueyard.com:

  • A CV
  • If applicable, a collection of links that best characterize your online presence

Venture Capital Principal / Senior Associate (f/m) @ Heidelberg Cement - Berlin, Germany

Apply here or get our referral

We are hiring for our VC team in Berlin, immediately. We prefer brilliant minds and personalities over previous VC experience (though experience certainly doesn’t hurt either).

Let’s be honest: When you read "HeidelbergCement", your first thoughts might be "dusty, slow, uninspiring".

That means: it is one of the last Eldorados to build exponential new businesses.

Our ambition is to fundamentally change how construction works. We are serious about this - no PR nonsense, no pseudo-disruption, no digital lab in Berlin that pretends to do innovation. We disrupt construction with force and a pure financial motivation. And: we are among the world’s most entrepreneurial companies (yes, we are!). That puts us in the best position to completely transform the construction industry. In just a few years, we want to be Germany’s most reputed corporate in disruptive business models.

On our team we give you a mission. Your mission is to lead investments. More specifically, your mission consists of …

  1. Finding ten rockstar startups a year within construction and adjacent spaces that we want to invest in. And bringing those startups to the point where they want us as an important investor
  2. Building a deal-sharing platform across North America, Europe and Asia for construction, and scaling it
  3. Carving out the fundamentals in startups’ business models in doing your due diligence. Coming up with own scalable business ideas within construction

  4. Giving our portfolio companies unique insight into construction

For this mission, we hire Mindset+IQ+EQ, not experience. You fit us when you are …

  • A brilliant mind who prefers ‘first principles’ thinking (google it if you are not familiar with the expression), logical reasoning (you know the word ‘ergo’) and ‘first of its kind’ creativity (we hate copy & paste)
  • An execution machine who always aspires towards ‘world-class’, rolls up the sleeves and gets it done
  • An empathizer who is hearing the intent and has excellent observation skills
  • A precise, no-nonsense communicator who expresses clearly opinions that are based on data and Facts

Having experience in venture capital is helpful, but for us, it is not a requirement. We want people with the best mindset+IQ+EQ on our team. We are happy to sacrifice experience, but we will not sacrifice personality and brain.

We strongly believe in aligned incentives with financial upside. That’s why we pay a competitive salary plus give you carry in our portfolio.

We like things fast and simple. Please just use the Easy Apply function and attach your CV.
